Sports Premium Funding

What is the Sports Premium?

What is the Sports Premium?
Since 2013 the government has provided substantial primary school sport funding. The funding has been jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and has seen money going directly to primary school Headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Each year schools have received £8,000 plus an extra £5 per pupil each year. So far, Burbage has received approximately £8,580 a year. This money is ring-fenced for sport and PE provision only.

Purpose of the funding
All schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but there is freedom to choose how we do it. At Burbage Primary School we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. In addition, we believe that an innovative and varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all children.

Use of the funding at Burbage Primary - General statement of intent (2016-2017)

The money will be used so that all children benefit regardless of their sporting ability. We will continue to place a high priority on our PE provision and, as such, have invested in additional staffing and resources to further enhance the PE curriculum as well as extra-curricular sports during lunchtime and after school clubs.
This year we are planning:

To continue the progress in swimming we are planning to put on an inter-house swimming gala.
We will again buy into the Avon Valley Sports Partnership to pay towards the cost of a Primary Partnership Sports Coordinator who organizes festivals of sport. This will allow our school to compete with other schools at local competitions.

  • We will continue to pay for a Dance specialist who will teach alongside all class teachers once a week and lead an extra-curricular club. The spring term club’s focus is to create a dance to perform in the Marlborough Dance Festival.
  • We will continue to run a Change for Life club, led by Young Leaders, (called Get Involved) to provide opportunities for children to increase their level of activity.
  • We are paying for cover to enable staff to undertake professional development in Sport and to enable the children to attend festivals and competitions.
  • We will provide a subsidy for those in need, to provide places in after-school sports clubs.
  • We will pay for transport to and from sporting events and activities that cannot be held at our own school.
  • We are updating PE and School Sport Resources, especially our Striking and Fielding Equipment and new Pop Lacrose Sets.
  • We will purchase sets of cameras and Ipads that will be used in PE lessons for dynamic assessment for learning opportunities.
